Ultimate Vintage at the Alameda Flea Market

This is one of my favorite places to window shop and find good deals.  The Alameda Flea Market aka <i>Alameda Point Antiques Faire </i>(www.alamedapointantiquesfaire.com, 510-522-7500) is on the Island of Alameda on an old Navy air base.  It is HUGE - about the length of an airport runway.  There is loads of parking, but you have be prepared to walk about a quarter mile to the entrance of the flea market.  They do have shuttles, but they're not too regular - so wear comfortable shoes.  I would also suggest bringing a hat because it's right on the water.  Even if it starts out foggy, the sun will come out and then you will appreciate the hat.  However, there's loads of vintage hats to buy there, so either way you'll be covered.<br /><br />Another interesting thing about this flea market, is the entrance fee.  If you're a truly an antique collector or buyer, you can show up early (6:00 - before 7:30) and pay $15.  You will have first pick of everything there.  If you don't like getting up that early, you can show up at 7:30 until 9 and pay $10.  The rest of us come sometime after 9 and pay only $5.  It really depends upon how serious you are.<br /><br />Once inside the gate, I walked all the way to the back, checking vintage clothes, purses and shoes along the way.  I saw a vendor from the Treasure Island Flea Market.  She liked the blog, but reminded me that I had put in the wrong name.  I told her I would rectify it.  She is actually Lisa Stiles-Holms of <i>Have Pitty?</i> (gotpitty@gmail.com, 916-835-6584).  Proceeds from the sale of her beautiful vintage clothes go to help to animals.  Lisa has some gorgeous vintage couture items. <br /><br />Once in the back, which borders on the San Francisco Bay, I started walking up and down the long rows of vintage everything.  I couldn't resist photographing other things besides clothes.  It is a vintage shopper's heaven and it is easy to get very distracted.  Many things are pricey, but the vendors do negotiate.  And there are actually ATM machines inside the flea market. <br /><br />Some other vendors that I met yesterday that I'd like to mention include Arturo Torres (408-417-4379) who displayed his fantastic black leather jacket.  He also had a 1960's full length leather and faux fur coat that was stunning.  <i>The Vintagerie</i> owned by Courtney Jordan (www.TheVintagerie.com, The Vintagerie@gmail.com, 843-425-3845) that had the best collection of 1950's hats and purses. Courtney recently relocated up to the Bay Area from Los Angeles.   <br /><br />Towards the end of my journey through the flea market (a few hours later), I ambled by another familiar stall.  I actually featured some of <i>The Window Lady's</i> interesting, original clothes in my last blog from Treasure Island.  Janay Rose, <i>The Window Lady</i> (www.etsy.com/shop/thewindowlady, 510-326-6324) has a wide variety of vintage clothes, shoes, purses, etc., but she also has original clothes that she's designed that are a combination of 19th century and 21st century whimsy.   She's camera shy, but definitely wanted me to give her some mention.  Her original clothes were my favorite.<br /><br />Finally, on my towards the exit, I found one more gem - Christina Evans' <i>The Empty Wardrobe</i> (www.theemptywardrobe.wordpress.com, theemptywardrobe@gmail.com).  Christina has designed very original, shorts from vintage pants.  Well, you'll see what I mean.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; I've always dreamed about having a great backyard deck where I can have summer barbecues with my friends, and this year we are finally making it happen! Late last summer Emery built us a deck, but we ran out of warm weather before he got to finish building all of the benches and railings, so this year we got an early start on our little backyard makeover and things are looking great! We just put in a patio door onto our deck which, as nerdy as it may sound, I am beyond excited about! <i>(more photos to come!)</i> Emery also built me some planter boxes on the deck and I have been gardening up a storm filling them with rosemary, thyme, basil, peppermint, coriander, chives, chocolate mint, dill, and of course a few pretty flowers! There is something so satisfying about being able to pick fresh herbs that you grew yourself.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Of course I always find time for a bit of vintage treasure hunting! These are two of my latest favorite finds: that amazing retro floral scalloped dress (it is pretty much a combination of everything that I love), and that absolutely incredible 1960's bar, which is possibly <b><i>one of my favorite things that I have ever thrifted.</i> </b>The bar top is coral laminate with little gold flecks throughout it and there is wood paneling along the front and on the sides. The stripes at the bottom are coral, cream, and brown padded vinyl panels, and there is also plenty of shelving on the back to store extra glasses and liquor bottles. Serious 1960's perfection, if you ask me. I just about had a heart attack when I stumbled upon it and knew immediately that I had to have it, even though I didn't really have room for it (but of course I made some!) When I host a special party this summer I plan on setting it up outside on the deck and making a bunch of mojitos using the fresh mint from my garden. When I'm not at work I'm outside as much as physically possible whether that means riding my moped, sitting by the pool (in Rosenort where I grew up), planting herbs (which are surprisingly thriving!) or my latest project-fixing up my 1950's bicycle! More photos of that whole process in the next few weeks!<br /><br />When I'm not outside soaking up the sun, I'm out thrifting! I've been out a lot in the past month and have found some really incredible treasures! The vintage dress in the top corner is proof of that! There is nothing more satisfying than finding a dreamy dress and having it fit <i>like a glove</i>! That was just the case with this beauty! For Father's Day my family went to Grand Forks, ND so that the boys could golf and the girls could hit up Target (seeing as how we don't have one quite yet)! After I filled up the trunk at Target I snuck off to some thrift stores as well as an antique shop, and found the most amazing pitcher and a set of mugs! They fit in just perfectly on my kitchen shelves, although I am running out of room! Last but not least I have been receiving some super fun mail including these straws that I ordered a few weeks ago! I can't wait to host a party or two this Summer and use up <a href="http://azpartypizzaz.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank">these cute straws</a>!<br /><br />All is well in the Thiessen residence, Summer is proving to be very good to us! I'm really really excited to be going to Folk Fest here in Winnipeg next week, and on a mini roadtrip <span style="background-color: white;">with Derek for our anniversary,</span><span style="background-color: white;">to Minneapolis to see this <a href="http://ourlittleclann.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank">lovely friend</a>, and then poof! Before I know it, Summer will be over! This was my Auntie Weezy's (she was my grandpa's sister Louise, but we called her Auntie Weezy) diner-The Rosenort Grill & Grocery, that opened on Dec 10, 1960. My grandpa is the one smack dab in the middle of the photo. This was the day that Premier Roblin came for a visit. Don't you just love everything about this picture? The hats! The dapper-looking men!
